Microsoft planning upgrade to Project software
May 05, 2003 3:52:00 PM ET
SEATTLE, May 5 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), the world's largest
software maker, on Monday said it is planning to introduce a new version of
its software for managing large and complicated corporate projects later
this year.
Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft, which recently disclosed its Project
software was set to pull in more than $500 million in revenue in the
current fiscal year to June, is aiming to revamp most of its application
software for businesses this year.
The newest version of Office, used for spreadsheet, documents, e-mail and
scheduling, is due out this summer and a new version of Project will launch
this fall, said Chris Capossela, general manager of the Project division.
"With our upcoming release we're improving our family of project management
products for every core user type: resource managers, project managers,
executives, team members, IT administrators and developers," Capossela
said.
Project allows users to set up deadlines, share information and documents,
coordinate schedules and track the progress of a project.
While about 7 percent of Office users use Project, Capossela said Microsoft
was aiming to extend Project's reach to 25 percent to 30 percent of Office
users.
Microsoft has been shifting Project onto the Web, where users can access
most of its functions online. Capossela said a server-based Project program
would have wider appeal, since it is inherently easier to share and
distributed information. REUTERS
